Vehicle access control for weighbridges and bulk material sites

Every load, identified. Every ticket, automated.

Trusted by

Vehicle access control for a weighbridge ties every load to the vehicle that carried it. Nedap Transit Ultimate identifies each authorised vehicle from up to 15 metres as it approaches the bridge, so the weighbridge software has the vehicle before the wheels are on the plate, and ANPR Lumo reads the number plates of casual customers against the registered customer list.

We distribute and support both readers as Nedap's certified UK partner, and our engineers have done these projects across UK waste and aggregates sites.

Every load has to be tied to a vehicle

Waste, recycling and aggregates sites depend on identifying the vehicle and the load accurately at the weighbridge. Manual ticketing is slow, error-prone and a frequent source of billing disputes.

Operators want every load tied automatically to the vehicle, the driver, the customer account and the time, with the data flowing into the weighbridge software and the back-office system without rekeying.

A fleet that is identified before it reaches the plate turns round faster. A casual customer who comes once still has to be recognised and billed.

  • The challenge

    Manual ticketing at the bridge

The operator reads the plate or asks the driver, finds the account and keys the ticket. It is slow, and every keystroke is a chance for a dispute later.

    The answer

The vehicle arrives before the wheels do

Transit Ultimate reads the windscreen tag from up to 15 metres, so the weighbridge software already has the vehicle when the weight is recorded and the ticket is generated without rekeying.

  • The challenge

    Casual customers with no tag

A skip hire firm or a householder may come once. There is no tag to read and no account to open.

    The answer

Number plates checked against the customer list

ANPR Lumo reads the plate from 2 to 10 metres and checks it against the registered customers, so a one-off visit is ticketed as cleanly as the regular fleet.

  • The challenge

    Loads that can't be traced

When a ticket is keyed by hand, the load, the vehicle, the driver and the customer are tied together only as well as the operator managed on the day.

    The answer

Every load tied to vehicle, account and time

Each ticket carries the identified vehicle, so every load is traceable and the data reaches the back-office system in one piece. Faster turnaround, accurate billing and far less manual administration.

  • The challenge

    Tied to one weighbridge vendor

A reader that only talks to one weighbridge package ties the site to that vendor for as long as the hardware lasts.

    The answer

Open protocols into standard weighbridge software

Both readers use standard outputs, and integration with standard weighbridge management software is well established, so the operator chooses the software. Where the gate also needs access control, Norpass3 is licence-free.

Which reader for which vehicle

A weighbridge sees two kinds of vehicle: the authorised fleet that comes every day, and casual customers who may come once. Each is identified in the way that suits it, and both readers hand the vehicle to the same weighbridge software.

Nedap Transit Ultimate

Fleet and contract vehicles carry a tag in the windscreen, and Transit Ultimate reads it from up to 15 metres as the vehicle approaches the bridge. The weighbridge software receives the vehicle before the wheels are on the plate, and the ticket is generated as soon as the weight is recorded.

How Transit Ultimate works at the weighbridge

Isometric view of a weighbridge entrance: a Transit Ultimate reader on a pole reads the tag in an approaching tipper's windscreen from up to 15 metres, the weighbridge software has the vehicle before the wheels are on the plate, the barrier opens and the ticket is tied to the vehicle and time, with the deck, the weighbridge office and stockpiles of aggregate beyond
  1. Vehicle approaches

Transit Ultimate reads the windscreen tag from up to 15 metres as the tipper approaches.

  2. Vehicle identified

The weighbridge software has the vehicle and account before the wheels are on the plate.

  3. Barrier opens

No stopping at a kiosk, no card to present.

  4. Load ticketed

The weight is recorded and the ticket carries the vehicle, the account and the time.

Beyond the weighbridge

The bridge is usually where a project starts. The same tag identifies the vehicle at the other points a bulk material site controls, from the gate to the loading station.

  • Site entrance

The gate opens for the authorised fleet and logs each arrival, and ANPR Lumo handles the casual customer in the same lane.

  • Loading stations

A reader at the loading point identifies the vehicle, so the right product goes into the right lorry and the load is recorded against it.

  • Exit weighbridge

A reader on the way out identifies the vehicle for the second weighing, so both weights sit on the same ticket.

  • Plant and skip hire yards

Hire fleet and customer vehicles are identified at the yard gate, and each movement is logged against the account.

Case study

Batıçim and Batısöke cement plants, Turkey

Two plants within the Batı Anadolu Grup run fully automated raw material intake and cement dispatch. Nedap long-range RFID identifies each vehicle at entry, exit, the waiting areas, the weighbridges and the loading stations, all integrated with the plant ERP.

Nedap certified partner PI OTOMASYON has commissioned more than 40 plants on this model, identifying over 10,000 vehicles a day across more than 250 weighbridges and 300 loading stations.

A Nedap installation, commissioned by PI OTOMASYON.

‘Our first installations are more than 10 years old and still operate with minimal maintenance, which results in a lower total cost of ownership for our customers.’

Oğuz Çelikel, Project Director, PI OTOMASYON

Works with the weighbridge software already on site

Neither reader needs its own software. Transit Ultimate hands the tag number to the weighbridge or access control system as a standard reader, over Wiegand or RS232 as standard with RS422, RS485, TCP/IP and Profibus DP interface boards, and ANPR Lumo sends plate reads over Wiegand, RS485 or Ethernet, with a REST interface for other software. Integration with standard weighbridge management software is well established.

Open protocols mean the operator is never locked into a single weighbridge software vendor. Where the site also wants the gate on an access control system, Norpass3, our licence-free access control software, takes the same readers.

Our engineers have done these projects across UK waste and aggregates sites, and work through the integration with you or your installer before the hardware is specified.

Weighbridge vehicle access control FAQs

What is vehicle access control for a weighbridge?

Vehicle access control for a weighbridge identifies each vehicle as it arrives at the bridge and hands its identity to the weighbridge software, so the ticket is tied to the vehicle, the driver, the customer account and the time without the operator keying anything in. The authorised fleet is usually identified by a long-range RFID tag in the windscreen, casual customers by number plate.

Does the driver have to stop at a kiosk or present a card?

Not to be identified. Transit Ultimate reads the windscreen tag from up to 15 metres, so the weighbridge software has the vehicle before the wheels are on the plate and the ticket is generated as soon as the weight is recorded. The driver doesn't wind a window down.

How are casual or one-off customers handled?

By number plate. ANPR Lumo reads the plate from 2 to 10 metres and the weighbridge software checks it against the registered customer list. A vehicle that isn't on the list stays at the barrier and is dealt with by the weighbridge operator in the usual way.

Will it work with our weighbridge software?

In most cases, yes. Integration with standard weighbridge management software is well established. Transit Ultimate hands the tag number over as a standard reader, with Wiegand and RS232 as standard and RS422, RS485, TCP/IP and Profibus DP interface boards, and ANPR Lumo sends plate reads over Wiegand, RS485 or Ethernet, with a REST interface for other software. Open protocols mean you are never tied to a single weighbridge software vendor.

Can the same tag identify the vehicle at the gate and the loading points?

Yes. One tag in the windscreen is read at the entrance, the weighbridge, the loading station and the exit, and each read goes to the same system. At the Batıçim and Batısöke cement plants, Nedap long-range RFID identifies vehicles at entry, exit, the waiting areas, the weighbridges and the loading stations, all integrated with the plant ERP.

Will the readers stand up to a quarry or a waste site?

Transit Ultimate is rated IP66 and ANPR Lumo IP65, so dust and rain are not a problem. Nedap's partner in Turkey reports that its first weighbridge installations are more than ten years old and still operate with minimal maintenance.

How much does vehicle access control for a weighbridge cost?

It depends on the number of weighbridges and lanes, how many vehicles need tags, whether casual customers are read by ANPR, and the barrier and integration work your installer carries out. Our ANPR system cost guide covers typical camera and installation costs, or ask us for a quote for your site.
